NDA PhD Seminar Showcases Students

The 8th Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) PhD seminar was held on Wednesday 29th January 2020 at the Manchester Conference Centre.

The seminar, convened by NNL, brought together the majority of the PHD students funded by the NDA through their PhD Bursary Scheme. Over 100 people attended the event. In addition to the students, attendees included academic supervisors, NNL industrial supervisors and key nuclear industry stakeholders.

Omer El Nasaney won best poster and Danielle Merrikin won best presentation.

Omer is a PhD student at the University of Strathclyde. His PhD, “Measurement of water package dimensions and deformations using robotically deployed optical methods” is funded by the NDA’s 2018 bursary scheme.

Danielle is a PhD student at the University of Cardiff. Her PhD “Element specific smart media for fast, low cost radionuclide analyses” is funded by the NDA’s 2016 bursary scheme.

The aim of the seminar was to enhance student, academic and industry knowledge of the NDA portfolio. This was well received and expressed from the feedback, along with attendees enjoying the networking aspects of the day; including improving links between academia and industry.

NNL administers the PhD bursary scheme on behalf of the NDA. It’s an important part of ensuring that the right skills and knowledge are available for the future of the industry.
