NNL App Privacy Statement

National Nuclear Laboratory Limited (referred to as “NNL”, “we”, “us” or “our” in this privacy notice) is committed to protecting the privacy and security of your personal information.  We will only process personal information about you in accordance with data protection principles, which are explained in NNL-POLICY-23 – NNL Data Protection Policy.

What is the purpose of this document?

This privacy notice describes how we collect and use personal information about you when you use the NNL Comms App (“the App”).  This privacy notice supplements any other notices (including IMS-GN-024 – NNL Privacy Notice for Employees, Workers and Contractors) and is not intended to override them.

Important information

This privacy notice along with the App’s terms of use (available on request from the NNL Comms team) together “Terms of Use”) apply to your use of the App which is hosted on the Apple App Store and Google Play (“Digital Distribution Sites”), once you have downloaded a copy of the App onto your mobile telephone or handheld device (“Device”).

Third party links

App content may include links to third-party websites, plug-ins and applications. By clicking on these links or enabling connections you may be allowing third parties to collect or share your personal data.  We have no control over these third-party websites, plug in or applications and are not responsible for their privacy notices, therefore you should also read their privacy notices to understand what personal data they collect about you and how they use it.

You have the right to make a complaint at any time to the Information Commissioner’s Office (“ICO”) ( or judicial levels.  We would, however, appreciate the chance to deal with your concerns before you approach the ICO so please contact us in the first instance.

Consent to installation of the App

The App provides news about NNL’s business, information about NNL’s facilities including opening hours, contact information, alerts (such as facility access) and weather information and directions (if you have enabled the processing of Location Data on your Device).

Before installation of the App, please indicate your consent to our processing of your personal data as described in this privacy notice.

YES I consent to the installation of the App for the purposes of accessing information about NNL’s business and facilities and weather and travel (directions) information (where I have enabled the processing of Location Data on my Device).

NO I do not consent to the installation of the App.

What personal information does NNL hold about you?

In addition to the personal data we collect about you described in IMS-GN-024 – NNL Privacy Notice for Employees, Workers and Contractors, we may collect, use, store and transfer the types of personal data about you listed in the Schedule in connection with your use of the App.

How your personal data is collected

We collect personal data in the following ways:

Direct InteractionYou may provide personal data when you request to use the App.
Information we collect about you and your deviceEach time you visit our website or use the App we will automatically collect personal data including Device and Location Data.  We collect this data using cookies and other similar technologies.  Please see our website privacy notice and cookie policy located on our website for further details.
Location DataOur location-enabled feature for providing weather and travel (directions) information requires your personal data for the feature to work.  If you wish to use this feature, you will be asked to consent to your data being used for this purpose.  You can withdraw your consent at any time by disabling Location Data in your Device settings.

How we use your personal data

We will only use your personal data when the law allows us to do so.  Most commonly we will use your personal data in the following circumstances:

  • Where you have consented before the processing.
  • Where we need to perform a contract we are about to enter or have entered with you.
  • Where it is necessary for our legitimate interests (or those of a third party) and your interests and fundamental rights do not override those interests.
  • Where we need to comply with a legal or regulatory obligation.

Schedule 1 sets out the lawful basis we will rely on to process your personal data.

Third party processing

We may sometimes share your personal data, insofar as we are permitted by law to do so, with trusted third parties such as IT companies who support the App and other business systems and delivery partners.

We require all third parties to respect the security of your personal data and to treat it in accordance with the law.

We do not allow our third-party service providers to use your personal data for their own purposes.  They can only process your personal data for specified purposes and in accordance with our instructions.

International transfers

We do not transfer your personal data outside the European Economic Area (“EEA”).

Data security

We have put in place appropriate security measures to prevent your personal data from being accidentally lost, used or accessed in an unauthorised way, altered, or disclosed.  We also limit access to your personal data to those employees, agents, contractors and other third parties who have a business need to know and they can only process your personal data on our instructions and will be subject to a duty of confidentiality.

We have procedures in place to deal with any suspected personal data breach and will notify you and any applicable regulator of a breach where we are legally required to do so.

Data retention

Whenever we collect or process your personal data, we will only keep it for as long as is necessary for the purpose for which it was collected.  At the end of that retention period, your data will either be deleted completely or anonymised.  If you have any questions in this regard, or any concerns about how long we keep your information for, please contact our Data Protection Officer.

Your legal rights

You have certain rights in certain circumstances under data protection law. These are set out in the Schedule.  If you wish to exercise any of your rights, please contact our Data Protection Officer.

Changes to this privacy notice

We reserve the right to update this privacy notice at any time, and we will provide you with a new privacy notice when we make any substantial updates.

We may collect and process the following data about you:

Your legal rights

You have the right to:

Request access to your personal data (commonly known as a “data subject access request”).This enables you to receive a copy of the personal data we hold about you and to check that we are lawfully processing it.
Request correction of the personal data that we hold about you.This enables you to have any incomplete or inaccurate data we hold about you corrected, though we may need to verify the accuracy of the new data you provide to us.
Request erasure of your personal data.This enables you to ask us to delete or remove personal data where there is no good reason for us continuing to process it.  You also have the right to ask us to delete or remove your personal data where you have successfully exercised your right to object to processing (see below), where we may have processed your information unlawfully or where we are required to erase your personal data to comply with local law.  Note, however, that we may not always be able to comply with your request of erasure for specific legal reasons which will be notified to you, if applicable, at the time of your request.
Object to processing of your personal dataYou can object to the processing of your personal data where we are relying on a legitimate interest (or those of a third party) and there is something about your particular situation which makes you want to object to processing on this ground as you feel it impacts on your fundamental rights and freedoms.  You also have the right to object where we are processing your personal data for direct marketing purposes.  In some cases, we may demonstrate that we have compelling legitimate grounds to process your information which override your rights and freedoms.
Request restriction of processing of your personal data.This enables you to ask us to suspend the processing of your personal data in the following scenarios: if you want us to establish the data’s accuracy;where our use of the data is unlawful but you do not want us to erase it;where you need us to hold the personal data even if we no longer require it as you need it to establish, exercise or defend legal claims; oryou have objected to our use of your personal data but we need to verify whether we have overriding legitimate grounds to use it.
Request the transfer of your personal data to you or to a third party.We will provide to you, or a third party you have chosen, your personal data in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format.  Note that this right only applies to automated information which you initially provided consent for us to use or where we used the information to perform a contract with you.
Withdraw consentYou can withdraw your consent at any time where we are relying on consent to process your personal data.  However, this will not affect the lawfulness of any processing carried out before you withdraw your consent.  If you withdraw your consent, we may not be able to provide the App or certain features to you.  We will advise you if this is the case at the time you withdraw your consent.
