Principal Process Engineer

The Engineering Design Team provides engineering design support across NNL and in the wider nuclear industry. We cover all aspects of engineering design such as optioneering studies, concept design, detail design, manufacturing, testing and installation. Our expertise includes the supply of active research and development rigs and analytical equipment, and the modification of existing nuclear process plant.

The role of the Principal Process Engineer is to provide engineering and scientific expertise to the design, build, testing, development, commissioning and on-site installation of active rigs and analytical equipment to support scientific research and development work in the nuclear industry.

NNL is looking for a driven individual to lead our mission to unlock the opportunity for nuclear energy to drive large-scale, clean hydrogen production, heat and other industrial processes. The Technology Leader position is to lead the development of NNL’s service offerings within this new area of the industry, working closely with the Government Account Director and other Subject Matter Experts for NNL’s Nuclear Hydrogen Programme. This individual will drive outstanding quality and delivery of technical programmes to exceed customer expectations, managing the integration of multiple interdependent but parallel workstreams for diverse customers on the development and deployment of nuclear-derived hydrogen technologies. Capability Manager (Defence PIE)

The role of Capability Manager is a key management role within NNL and it requires an experienced individual to effectively manage a team, which in this instance specialises in Post Irradiation Evaluation (PIE), providing a range of services for key customers. The Capability Manager must manage the team and deploy their capability to effectively deliver for NNLs customers. The role of a Capability Manager is complex,  and requires an ability to balance several high importance areas in parallel while maintaining a focus on the ongoing high-quality delivery to the satisfaction of NNLs customers. The managing of key ‘singleton’ resources is particularly challenging and requires stakeholder management with the project teams, Account Directors and customers. The Capability Manager will ensure a balanced workload across the team, and the development and nurturing of capabilities and skills within the team is key, to meet both current and future customer needs. To facilitate this, the Capability Manager should also develop and maintain strong work relationships with the relevant internal research and development programmes. Focusing on the progression and development of individuals within the team is also a key focus whilst aligning that to the succession challenges specific to the  wider PIE capability area. The Capability Manager will also work towards attaining technical lead roles and becoming the customer committee representative for work programmes within their area (specifically related to dismantling activities, application of examination techniques and development of hot cell equipment).

Job Introduction

A new post has been created to provide Project Management support for NNL’s ongoing EDF reactor support programme. This programme, which is delivered predominantly from NNL’s Windscale facility, has been running for over a decade and has recently entered a new five-year contract phase. The programme encompasses several workstreams each delivering essential services to EDF to support ongoing safe operation of the UK AGR reactor fleet.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the delivery of a range of Capex funded projects intended to provide new equipment and capability to support EDF work. The role involves working closely with EDF Customer Workstream lead, project technical staff, engineering team and facility commissioning team, and covers all phases of the project lifecycle:
