NNL operate a number of secure facilities and IT networks across several sites in support of its defence customers. This vacancy is to support the Senior Defence Security and Secure IT Manager in the day to day operation of these facilities and associated Secure IT Infrastructures. The role will be based on the Sellafield site but will involve occasional travel to other NNL and customer sites to maintain these network spurs.

Training will be given where required to ensure the cryptographic custodianship and secure infrastructure aspects of the role can be executed. National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is conducting a major programme of work for one of our important customers in heavily shielded cells in our Active Handling Facility (AHF) on Sellafield site.  The programme requires NNL to utilise a number of scientific techniques to conduct Post Irradiation Examination (PIE) of nuclear material as well as maintaining a robust archive of irradiated materials located on site. The PIE Technical Support Assistant will be predominantly responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all information and records for irradiated materials that have been archived and are located at our Windscale site.

The PIE Technical Support Assistant will also be required to operate equipment that is contained within the cells of the AHF using master-slave manipulators.  Working as part of a team of technicians, supervised by a Technical Lead or a Task Supervisor.

The position requires the maintenance of strong working relationships with the immediate team, projects and facility teams. The programme requires team members to work to high quality standards and demonstrate an enabling, pro-active attitude to resolving issues.  In accordance with any nuclear industry positions, individuals will need to demonstrate a high degree of nuclear professionalism, adhering and contributing to a positive health and safety culture.

NNL has a world-class active electron microscope suite, including high-end TEM, FIB and SEM instruments. The company supports both national infrastructure and academic research, through university interactions. The Electron Optics team provides information on fuel and reactor material performance, supporting the operation of nuclear facilities.

There has recently been a significant investment in the team’s capability - now offering FIB, PFIB (with TOF SIMS) and X-ray CT, together with TEM and SEM. There is a requirement for an experienced individual to lead the FIB and CT capability, providing a correlative microscopy service for internal and external customers.
