Signature Research Programme – Spent Nuclear Fuel

The UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is proud to announce the launch of our Signature Research Programme on the disposition of spent nuclear fuel and civil separated plutonium (Pu) and uranium (U).

In support of the UK’s nuclear clean-up and new reactor build missions and the global nuclear renaissance, it is the NNL’s vision to achieve a significant advance in knowledge of the disposition routes for spent fuel, Pu and U. NNL will stimulate debate and inform decisions on disposition through targeted research to yield up-to-date, substantiating data.

  • This Signature Research Programme is key to NNL’s own mission and is self-funded, as part of our objective to re-invest profits for the benefit of the UK nuclear industry.
  • NNL will deploy its own world-class skills and laboratory facilities and, through its links with UK universities, actively develop future and long-lasting expertise.
  • With the worldwide spotlight on this R&D field, NNL will seek out international and national partners to enhance our Signature Research Programme.
  • NNL will publish its view on the R&D requirements to support disposition at the end of June 2009.
