NNL wins contract in the United Arab Emirates

An NNL led consortium including Westlakes Consulting, VT Group and the University of Central Lancashire, has been chosen, following a recent competition to provide the UAE Government’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) with support in the area of Radiological and Instrumentation support.

The work will include:

  • advising on the establishment of a radiological and environmental testing laboratory
  • radiation monitoring instrumentation
  • dosimetry to support the nuclear energy programme and
  • training programmes for local UAE staff

Each consortium member will provide specialist input to the work programme led by NNL.

UAE has an ambitious nuclear energy programme and recently announced the location of its first reactor. The reactor technology will be supplied by South Korea under a contract signed in 2009. The first reactor is due to be operational in 2017.

FANR is the regulatory authority established to review the safety case and licence application presented by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and grants licences for the facility.

NNL Sales Director, Huw Morgan commented “NNL and our partners are delighted to have been chosen from significant international competition. We look forward to working with and supporting FANR in this area.”
