Government annouces Centre of Excellence for Nuclear

The UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory welcomes Gordon Brown’s announcement of the UK Government’s intention to form a Centre of Excellence for Nuclear. The Centre will promote the development of cost-effective civil nuclear technology which cannot be diverted for use in weapons programmes. It will be developed in partnership with industry and other countries, will receive initial funding of £20million from the Government.

This is good news for the NNL and we will work with Government as it determines the role and structure of the centre.  It will be important that these two important Government backed initiatives (the NNL and the Centre) complement each other and exploit synergies where possible.

NNL’s Director of Science, Technology and Project Delivery, Dr Paul Howarth commented:

“The NNL welcomes the establishment of a Centre of Excellence and we look forward to working with Government over the coming weeks on defining the work programme and the organisation of the Centre. This is a great opportunity for the NNL and we are delighted to be acknowledged in the Cabinet Office press announcement”
