Waste and Residues Management

National Nuclear Laboratory provides services to both existing and future waste management plants as well as maximising re-use and recycle of nuclear materials.

Services include:

  • Process support to current waste plants
  • Waste characterisation and retrieval
  • Waste options strategy and underpinning
  • Uranium recovery
  • Decontamination

Waste characterisation and retrieval

NNL has developed a range of tools to sample, characterise and retrieve waste for our customers. Alongside this, we minimise costs for customers by replicating waste through the use of simulants and then using these simulants to develop retrieval and treatment solutions in a non-active environment, dramatically cutting costs.

National Nuclear Laboratory can design, build and operate bespoke small scale waste treatment processes as required, supported by our wide range of facilities and predictive modelling tools. NNL can also use these facilities and tools to develop solutions for graphite treatment and disposal.

Waste options strategy and underpinning

NNL has extensive experience in working with our customers to define and select options for waste strategies, at the plant, site or national level. This experience includes the development of POCO strategies, waste disposal and sentencing strategies and the design and development of waste processes for all types of waste including spent fuel and special nuclear materials which have been consigned as waste. We can assist customers with wasteform selection and support them through the wasteform approvals process.

In addition, NNL has sufficient experience to be able to participate in consultations on waste strategy at the national level.

Uranium Recovery

National Nuclear Laboratory has tackled the problem of uranium contaminated waste head-on through the use of simple, yet effective techniques which allow much of the recovered uranium to be reused in the fuel cycle.

Focussing predominantly on the waste generated at the UK's Springfields and Capenhurst nuclear sites, NNL has set up a suite of technologies which can be used to recover uranium from a wide range of waste types including bricks, plaster, lagging, filters, mineral oils, plastic, combustible waste and graphite.

Decontamination

NNL provides novel decontamination solutions to its customers and is particularly focused on creating innovative answers to some of the most difficult decontamination situations in the industry.

Our innovation programme has resulted in the creation of a foam decontamination system which has been shown to achieve up to 95% decontamination with significantly less waste volume than conventional decontamination techniques.
