With nuclear reactor and fuel technology services based on nearly 30 years of expertise, National Nuclear Laboratory offers customers analysis and support across all aspects of current and future reactor operation and design.
NNL supports the continued safe and efficient operation of nuclear generation systems and is involved in the optioneering of new fuel and reactor types and fuel cycle solutions.
Design and Analysis
Our core design and analysis services include the design of fuel assemblies, loading pattern development and optimisation, applicable to all fuel types including non-irradiated uranium, reprocessed uranium, mixed oxide fuels and advanced fuels. These services include safety and performance assessments of the fuel and the core. We are also able to support our customers throughout the process of nuclear design and licensing as required.
Nuclear Physics
National Nuclear Laboratory's nuclear physics services include nuclear data evaluation, spent fuel inventory calculations and criticality assessments. Our nuclear data evaluation service ensures that the data used in spent fuel inventory calculations is not only fit for purpose but that its accuracy is known, meanwhile our spent fuel inventory calculation service uses standard FISPIN inventory code alongside other codes (TRAIL, WIMS, CASMO-4) to calculate inventories of nuclear fuel stores.
Future reactors
Our fuel technology services include fuel performance analysis, fuel development, the production of experimental fuels and the specification of fuels for future reactors systems.
Fuel Performance
The fuel performance services address the design and performance of nuclear fuel including fuel performance modelling. Reactor systems covered include thermal and fast neutron systems, Light Water Reactors (LWRs), High Temperature Gas Reactors (HTRs) and Generation IV systems. Fuel types covered include LWR rods, fast reactor pins and HTR coated particle fuel.
NNL is also able to offer customers development and production services for a wide range of fuels including uranium, reprocessed uranium, MOX, dopant and advanced fuels.
