Tim Abram - Reactor Systems

Tim Abram is the National Nuclear Laboratory's (NNL) Senior Fellow in Reactor Systems.

Can you tell us about your history in the nuclear industry?

I started my career with BNFL in 1987 working on the next generation of AGR fuel design. This early exposure to a novel research and development programme in which the fuel and reactor system were inextricably linked has set the theme for my subsequent career.

I have, among other things, worked on PWR fuel, ZIRLO cladding alloy and, in the early days, Pebble Bed Modular Reactors.

What will the role of Senior Fellow mean for you?

Until recently, BNFL Group funded all of the advanced fuels and reactors work within the UK, with NNL managing an industry wide-team - this included Amec NNC, Serco, UKAEA and several universities. This funding has now shifted to be the responsibility of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.

A significant part of my Senior Fellow role is maintaining and developing these links.
