Jim Gulliford is the National Nuclear Laboratory's (NNL) Senior Fellow in Criticality
Can you give us some background about your career?
I studied Physics with Geophysics at Bath University. The early years of my career were spent working as a Field Seismologist, which involved letting off large amounts of dynamite in exotic locations such as Australia, Africa and just outside Basingstoke.
I joined the nuclear industry in 1984 working on reactor physics, shielding and criticality programmes for a series of experimental reactors.
What are your main areas of work at present?
Since joining the BNFL Group in 2002, my responsibilities have include assessment methodology and staff development activities as well as providing technical support to projects. I am currently involved in studies with Nirex, Imperial College and Serco Assurance on modelling the dynamic behaviour of post-closure criticality events in a repository.
What will your priorities be in the Senior Fellow role?
I think it's imperative that we create an environment where key capabilities can be maintained and where new science graduates are prepared to put nuclear R&D at the top of their list of career opportunities. I see this as the major part of my Senior Fellow role. My key priorities will be:
