Fuel Manufacture and Reactors>Spent Fuel Storage and Transport

NNL supports customers spent fuel storage and transport requirements by supplying fuel inventory and criticality services. These are based on our extensive and detailed knowledge of spent fuel nuclear physics.

FISPIN

We provide customers with inventories based on careful modelling of the relevant reactor and through using FISPIN, the UK standard inventory code. Our suite of analysis tools ensures that fuel inventory data is accurate and comprehensive.

Transport Flask Modelling

Additionally, we undertake transport flask modelling for customers, including structural dynamic impact modelling and thermal modelling. This offers support during the flask licensing process and can be undertaken alongside physical flask drop tests as a cost effective method of getting as much information as possible from a drop test.

We also undertake fuel storage modelling to consider, for example, temperature as a function of diurnal temperature, insolation rates, natural and forces ventilation and the effect of heaters and chillers. NNL also provides structural integrity analysis of fuel stores and associated equipment in response to external hazards such as seismic events or vehicular impacts.
