RadBall - Double Winner!

The National Nuclear Laboratory were double winners at last night's ICheme Awards.

RadBall, our innovative radiation mapping device, won the ICheme Award for Innovation and Excellence in Health and Safety. In addition, RadBall inventor, Dr Steve Stanley won the Young Engineer of the Year Award.

Steve commented "This is excellent news; a real honour for the National Nuclear Laboratory. RadBall wouldn't have come about if it wasn't for NNL's foresight and ongoing investment in innovation. It's great that the work we do has been recognised in such a prestigious forum."

The Young Engineer Award is presented to an individual for achievements and tangible real applications of chemical, biochemical or process engineering skills to address important economic, environmental and social issues.

Key areas for selecting the winner include:

Have they studied or are they currently studying for a degree in chemical engineering or a related discipline (biochemical, pharmaceutical, energy etc)?

• Does the area of work they have been nominated for fulfil one of main criteria for the award above?
• Does the work contribute to the development of the process or the profession?
• Is their contribution innovative or outstanding in any way?
• Are they a good ambassador for the profession?

The Award for Excellence in Health and Safety is presented to the company who have shown exemplary performance in the development of technology to apply effective measures to identify, assess, manage and control risks or who have developed opportunities to build a common understanding of risk through collaboration with government, industry and society.

Key areas for selecting the winner include:

• Risk: build a common understanding of risk issues and influence risk reduction
• Performance: create cultures to deliver real improvement in health, safety and environmental performance
• Open Dialogue: proactively share learning from past successes and failures
