Preston Laboratory

The Preston Laboratory on the Springfields site is designed to service the needs of businesses in low-activity uranium research and development as well as providing technical and business serviecs from an office base. It was opened in July 1997.

The building has three main areas:

  1. Uranium-active facilities
  2. Non-active research and development facilities
  3. Office accommodation

The Active facilities have two main areas:

1. Chemistry Facilities, providing:

  • research and development chemistry laboratories
  • process instrumentation laboratory
  • rig development hall
  • pilot plant capable of housing we process equipment
  • radiometrics counting laboratory
  • low level waste separations laboratory
  • intermediate level waste physical and radiochemical characterisation laboratory

2. Oxide Powder Development Facilities, providing:

  • powder processing laboratories and equipment
  • total enclosures for work with bulk uranic and other hazardous powders
  • pellet pressing facilities
  • sintering furnaces
  • powder and pellect QA testing laboratory
  • facility for engineering development of uranium active rigs
  • rig hall

The research and development facilities provide:

  • chemistry laboratory
  • chemical rig hall
  • fluorine chemistry facility
  • microscopy laboratory incorporating an environmental scanning electron microscope, an energy dispersal X-ray microscope, a secondary ion mass spectrometer, a laser confocal microscope and an atomic force microscope.
